The Rainbow leads to…..Prospect, Ct

Posted by Dave Jones Realty on June 9, 2008

Rainbow over Prospect.

Well the freak storm last night at least produced one good thing, a great rainbow! Here in Prospect we received 3″ of Rain in 30 minutes. The winds picked up and knocked down several trees causing some temporary road closures. The Prospect Fire House was struck by lightning and lost their phone service and also power. Mayor bob said the 911 service was never interrupted however.

Prospect Playscape

Cheshire recently opened a new Playscape for the kids and we visited it this past week.  I have never seen anything like this, and it is a true must see.

That is the map link to the location, although what is shown is the OLD playscape, not the new one.  There is so much to do and we spent two hours there, the time just flew.  Everything from a sandbox area, to a Spider web climbing area, a large rock climbing unit, several playscapes, Picnic areas, etc, etc.  There also seems to be a large emphasis on safety.  The padding underfoot of several sections is a composite material that is very spongy.  It seems like the truely spared no expense.

The Beardsley Zoo in CT. Fun family trip idea.

Posted by Dave Jones Realty on May 28, 2008

My family and I made our way over to Beardsley zoo in Bridgeport.  It was a beautiful, cool day, and the zoo wasn’t too crowded.  The zoo has a new bird show that shows three times a day.  It was very interesting in that it is an “in the air” bird show with none of the birds having clipped wings.

There was a little excitement when the owl in the show took off, and they zoo rangers had to attempt to track him down.

One tip… Check your local library for passes to local attractions.  Our local zoo has several Museums and kids attractions.  The Beardsley zoo passes out library has admit 4 for FREE.  You can’t beat that.

Also be sure to pack a cooler with sandwiches and drinks.  There is a great place to sit in the shade and enjoy your lunch!

Here are some photos I took.

Recap from the Prospect, Ct Easter Egg Hunt, Amber Alert Event

Posted by Dave Jones Realty on March 24, 2008

100_1729.jpgProspect Ct Easter Egg Hunt Town Green

This past Saturday was the annual Prospect, Ct Easter Egg hunt and Lunch with the Easter Bunny.

The event was VERY well attended, and here are some photos.  Two general observations as pointed out by my 4 year old son…

1) There actually aren’t any “Eggs” at the Easter egg hunt.  It is just candy.   lots and lots and lots of Candy.  It is scattered all around on the town green, and when Mayor Bob Chatfield blows the air horn, it is every child for themselves.

2) Lunch with the Easter Bunny isn’t exactly “Lunch with the Easter Bunny”.  The Easter Bunny isnt in the same room where the Lunch is.  The main hall of the Prospect Fire House is used to serve the Hot Dogs, Chips and cookies.   After lunch you go down the hall and wait to see the Easter Bunny and take your photos.

After you see the Easter Bunny, you get a coupon from the Big Dipper Ice Cream for a $1 off a kids cone.  Once you exited the Easter Bunny you are actually in the Firehouse Garage.  This is also great for the kids.  The Prospect Fire Department has everything opened up so everyone can see.   All the compartments on the firetrucks, the doors to the trucks, etc.  Very nice.  This is also where the Amber Alert people were setup, and the Prospect Ladies auxiliary was there selling flowers as well.  It was a tremendous turnout and the money from the Lunch went to the Ladies Auxiliary.

If you arent familiar with the Amber Alert Program you can find out more about it here.  It is a MUST for parents nowadays.

Family fun in Connecticut.

Posted by Dave Jones Realty on January 15, 2008

Family Activities and things to do in Connecticut (edit/delete)

With Spring right around the corner I thought I would take a minute and post a detailed response to a question I get from many of my Real Estate clients relocating to Connecticut.

“What is there fun for kids to do in Connecticut.”  There are actually quite a few BIG attractions as well as some smaller, often over looked one.

Beardsley Zoo LogoBeardsley Zoo- A great local zoo with many different attractions throughout.  Located in Bridgeport Ct. Adults are $9 to get in, children under 3 are free.  One good idea is to check at your local library for FREE passes.  I know the Prospect, Cheshire and Waterbury library all carry passes.  I’m sure other towns do as well.

Connecticut Dinosaur Park- The largest collection of Dinosaur tracks in North America. It is located in Rocky Hill, Ct.  it has several interactive displays and is always a hit with the young Dino Fans.

Keeping with the Dinosaur Theme is Dinosaur Crossing There is a 50 acre Dino park with over 1 1/2 miles of walking trails.  Here they have very realistic looking Life-sized dinosaurs.  There is also a small water area for the kids to cool off called the splash pad.  Inside there is a huge gift shop and some indoor activities.  These indoor activities are separate, and get very expensive.

essex steam train

Another must see is the Essex Steam Train  Here you can embark on a hour long train ride through scenic Connecticut River Valley.  They also stop off at the Essex steam boat for an optional cruise down he Connecticut river. You can by a family pass for 2 adults and up to 6 children on the Train for $50.

A great place for children to go and get hands on interactive learning is the Connecticut Children’s Museum in West Hartford. There are several interactive displays, a play area for smaller children, and even a theater that plays movies on the ceiling called the “Dome”.  This is another attraction that free passes or discount passes can be found at your local library.  They even have some small animals like bobcats, snakes and owls. children's museum

There are two amusement parks in Ct.  the first and largest is Lake Compounce in Bristol.  This park has everything from roller coasters to log flumes, and bumper cars to a water park. The season pass is $69.99 and will pay for itself in a little over 2 visits Since admission is $33.95. per person, per day.  The park is known for its famous wooden Roller Coaster.  In recent years they have really spent a lot of money upgrading their water park and it is really a place you can spend a day in itself.  There is also a private beach on the lake where you can bask in the sun.

This is part one, I will post part 2 early next week!

Newsday article “Mold Problem found that wasnt disclaimed.”

Posted by Dave Jones Realty on November 5, 2007

S.C. Couple Find Secret Moldy RoomBy Associated Press 5:36 PM EDT, November 2, 2007 GREENVILLE, S.C.Kerri and Jason Brown discovered a secret room behind a bookcase containing a homeowner’s worst nightmare — mold. Also in the room was a handwritten note: “You found it!” What the Browns found was a mold problem so serious the previous owner was forced to move, according to the note.

Fearing their young daughter’s health, the Browns hired an environmental engineer who detected high levels of several types of mold, including a black mold fungus called Stachybotrys.

“It terrified me,” Kerri Brown told WYFF-TV in Greenville. “I had heard reports of what it does for children, and I was terrified.”

The Browns said a home inspection done before they bought it did not include a mold test.

The Browns filed a lawsuit claiming Century 21 Flynn & Youngblood, real estate agent Sue Bakx and Fannie Mae knew about the mold.

Fannie Mae, the Federal National Mortgage Association, bought the Brown’s home for $75,000 and will be dropped from the lawsuit. The family plans to continue the suit against Century 21 Flynn & Youngblood and real estate agent Sue Bakx.

Both the company and the agent told the television station they didn’t know anything about the mold. A telephone call to Century 21 was referred to Bakx, who did not immediately return a telephone message Friday
